Perspective from living a T1D life: how i feel

by IBD Medical on January 30, 2023

Sarah has joined Glucology on this project to help drive more conversations around injecting in public. This experience for most can carry a sense of shame/embarrassment/hesitation.

In her 'day in the life of...' vlog, Sarah shares some of her emotional 'traumatic' experiences of injecting in public when she was younger and wants to change the narrative around this. Enjoy watching and get a sneak peak of what Sarah goes through on a busy day.

Other people take oral medications in public, injecting insulin is no different. There’s nothing to hide or be embarrassed about. We don’t need “injection rooms or other spaces for injections” we need to normalize diabetes so it’s not some horrible secret shame. People didn’t get it by being “bad”.

I am a T2D and I am on Insulin and inject in public, I visited family interstate a few years back just before COVID-limited travel and she was disgusted that I injected in public and was demanding I use the bathroom

I have been a T1D for over 40 years and I have always publicly injected myself when using needles, pens, etc. Have been on an insulin pump for 17 years now and similarly I unashamedly bring my pump out for public viewing when checking BGLevels and managing boluses. It is who I am. In all my time as a T1D I have never experienced a bad reaction from anyone in relation to publicly managing my diabetes.

It is disgraceful that T!D feel ashamed and embarrassed when they inject themselves in public.
Why should we, this is our way of life without this we would die.
Drug addicts have their nice clean injecting rooms, and really they can live without injecting themselves.
So lets get more places for T!D to inject and take their BGL.
Maureen.
