Do you ever experience T1D burnout?

by IBD Medical on September 09, 2024

Type 1 Diabetes Burnout refers to the feeling of overwhelm and not being able to look after yourself or your regular daily to-do's including managing blood sugars. This happens to many of us living with type 1 diabetes, but burnout can happen to anyone - regardless of having type 1 diabetes or not. BUT, you don't have to continue to experience it moving forward. I share with you some tips on avoiding T1D burnout, and my own experiences with it. Listen to what Andi has to say about T1D burnout experience!

Here are additional 10 tips for dealing with diabetes management burnout:
  1. Acknowledge your feelings: It’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed. Recognising diabetes burnout is the first step in addressing it.

  2. Take small breaks: Stepping back from your routine occasionally can help you reset mentally. Focus on one part of diabetes management at a time.

  3. Seek support: Talk to friends, family, or join a diabetes support group. Sharing your experiences can ease the emotional burden and provide fresh perspectives.

  4. Simplify your routine: Use tools like CGMs or insulin pumps to make tracking blood glucose levels and managing your diabetes easier.

  5. Set realistic goals: Focus on achievable daily or weekly goals rather than aiming for perfection, reducing pressure while staying on track.

  6. Celebrate small wins: Reward yourself for maintaining your diabetes management, even with small steps, to stay motivated and positive.

  7. Work with your healthcare team: If burnout is overwhelming, consult your doctor about adjusting your treatment plan to better suit your lifestyle.

  8. Incorporate self-care: Make time for stress-relief activities like exercise, meditation, or hobbies to maintain balance and well-being.

  9. Change your mindset: Concentrate on what you can control and aim for progress, not perfection, with your blood sugar levels and overall diabetes care.

  10. Consider professional help: If burnout persists, seeking guidance from a counsellor or therapist can help you manage the emotional impact of long-term diabetes management.
